Einführung
Landkarten und kartografische Ozeane sind quasi zur Sachlichkeit verpflichtet. Was die maßstabsgetreuen Darstellungen vermissen lassen, schenkt ihnen Matthew Cusick: Impulsivität, Emotion und Kraft. In seinen Map Works verbindet Cusick Teile der Kartenwerke puzzleartig zu neuen, rauschenden Motiven. Gewaltige Wellen türmen sich auf, wo sonst Zahlen und Linien das generalisierte Bild bestimmen. Durch seine Collagen erwächst aus der ursprünglichen kartentechnischen Zweidimensionalität eine dreidimensionale Wirkung, die sogar den gigantischen Ausmaßen einer sich überstürzenden Welle gerecht wird.
