Henry Horenstein

Henry Horenstein (*1947) ist in der amerikanischen Fotografie seit langem eine bekannte Figur und Lehrer; zu seinen Schülerinnen gehörten zum Beispiel Nan Goldin. Unter seinen eigenen
Lehrern waren die fotografischen Meister Harry Callahan und Aaron Siskind. Seit den 1970er-Jahren lehrt er an der bedeutenden Rhode Island School of Design. Mehr als dreißig Bücher und
unzählige Ausstellungen im In- und Ausland, in Museen und Galerien, verzeichnet sein Lebenslauf. Über seine Tieraufnahmen schrieb die Zeitung Boston Globe: „Henry Horenstein schafft quasi abstrakte Formen von Lebewesen.“ Nicht nur seine Serie „Creatures“ mit Landtieren, sondern auch seine Werkgruppe ‚Aquatics’ mit Wasserwesen gehören zu den zentralen Beiträgen in der heutigen Tierfotografie. Akribisch, präzise und gefühlvoll zugleich sind seine Bilder.
„Vor zehn Jahren begann ich ohne erkennbaren Grund, Land- und Meerestiere zu fotografieren, und veröffentlichte Bücher mit Titeln wie Creatures, Canine und Aquatics. Im Verlauf der Arbeit rückte ich immer näher an meine Objekte heran, um sie noch gründlicher zu betrachten. Diese Art zu arbeiten gab mir ein ganz anderes Gefühl als das dokumentarische Fotografieren von Menschen, Orten und Ereignissen, sie war viel friedlicher, entspannender und mehr nach innen gerichtet. Und sie erforderte viel mehr Geduld. Den menschlichen Körper zu fotografieren war nur der natürliche nächste Schritt in diese Richtung.
All diese Fotografien haben ein elementares Ziel. Ich möchte von Grund auf gute Bilder machen - handwerklich gelungene Aufnahmen, die einen anhalten, schauen und vielleicht nachdenken lassen. Darüber hinaus verfolge ich keine großartige Intention, kein verstecktes oder offenes Programm. Jeder kann selbst entscheiden, wie er die Fotos sehen möchte, als grafische Bilder, als Metaphern oder sogar als Dokumente. Für mich macht es keinen Unterschied.“
