In 1826, Joseph Nicéphore Niépce took the first photograph in the world, still preserved today. 200 years later, billions of new images are created every day. Most vanish in the stream. Pioneers of Photography

Berenice Abbott documented New York in transition and insisted that photography go its own way – not the way of painting. Robert Lebeck shaped decades of German visual history as a photojournalist, among others for Stern magazine. Both prove: a good photograph needs no trend to endure.

Glamour and Zeitgeist

Slim Aarons photographed, in his own words, "attractive people doing attractive things in attractive places" – creating the defining image of post-war high society. Bert Stern revolutionized advertising photography and created one of the most famous portraits of Marilyn Monroe with "The Last Sitting."
