Gone are the days when buying art was for the privileged few! We believe that ‘Art is for everyone’ and we work hard to forge relationships with artists in a way that is respectful to their trade, and enables us to bring high quality, limited-edition art online to you affordably. Whilst we proudly collaborate with master artists such as Damien Hirst and Nobuyoshi Araki we feature many exciting newcomers and are proud to be a platform for up-and-coming artists; enabling budding collectors to buy limited edition, signed and numbered artworks that will only grow in popularity and value. Our well-curated portfolio includes more than3,000 artworks in a vast variety of genres and techniques, ensuring that there is something for everyone.

Art has been moving people since the beginning of time, and perhaps our best piece of advice about buying art online is this - buy art that moves you. What makes one person love and another person be indifferent to the same piece of art, is exactly the same magic that makes one artist passionate about a genre that another may quickly tire of. The intrinsic link between art and the individual human state is as beautiful as it is complex. Approach buying art online with an open-mind and heart, and take your time to find pieces that make you want to look at them time and time again.

With buying what you love front of mind, here are our top tips for buying art online:

LUMAS art editions close the gap between the very high-priced unique pieces of the galleries and the high-circulation prints of the museum stores. The hand-signed works in limited editions offer a fine selection of hand-signed artworks that our curators discover at international exhibitions and art fairs. Our editions are usually published in editions of 75 to 150 instead of the five that are common on the art market, meaning they are available for under € 399. Whilst affordable, they are of course limited, meaning that they are inherently more valuable and collectable.

There are numerous benefits to purchasing limited edition art prints and this is especially true if an artwork sells out. These prints are a great financial investment, often holding a higher residual value than non-tangible assets. Limited edition prints are generally in high demand and prints signed by the artist are particularly valuable, making them a smart investment choice. This is especially true if an artwork sells out. Don't forget, the price of LUMAS editions increases the more pieces are sold, so snap up your favourite now, before it's beyond your budget!

Anyone who has visited a LUMAS Gallery quickly understands why our reputation for quality is unrivalled. Our custom-made frames are made of solid wood and cater to every taste and style. In addition, pre-assembled, professional wall mounting facilitates at-home hanging that does these beautiful artworks justice. Our favourite way to display art and one you’ll find used widely in our galleries, is in an unframed, acrylic finish - as recommended by LUMAS customer Jolyon Holloway on Trust Pilot:

“I particularly recommend the acrylic finish which enables the entire print to be viewed without the restriction of a frame around it! The prints are securely packed and delivered by courier so that they arrive quickly and in perfect condition. I recommend this excellent and highly efficient web gallery.”

LUMAS guarantees the uniqueness of its works. A handwritten artist's signature on the back of each limited edition identifies the work as an original. In addition, the edition certificate provides information on the format, date, total edition and consecutive number. Discover one of the most extensive and best-curated portfolios of contemporary photography worldwide and find among more than3,000 works by 250 established artists and newcomers!

Anyone who has visited a LUMAS gallery in-person knows the "wow factor" you feel when seeing LUMAS artworks in real-life. But how can this experience be reproduced online? We use 3D imaging technology and an AR viewing tool (iPhones only) to bring our online art to life. We provide a range of in-room images and videos which show artworks from different angles, on different walls.

With the AR tool, you can preview our artwork on the walls in your home by simply scanning a QR code! Try it out for yourself today; it’s as close as you can get to having the artwork in your home and our top tip for ensuring the art you buy is right for the space you are considering.

If you’ve come online to buy art and feel overwhelmed by choice, asking yourself some quick questions will help narrow down your search:

Do you visualise your purchase as photography or a painting?

Do you have a specific style or theme in mind?

What colours do you find most appealing?

What colours does your room feature that you need to coordinate with?

Are you considering a portrait or landscape artwork?

At LUMAS, you can buy art online easily; our website enables you to filter your results in all of the above ways and more. You can view our online photography and paintings and easily filter them by size, price, colour and orientation. Try it for yourself!

If you have a clear idea of what you want but need some inspiration, our Collections are a great place to get started. The artworks in each Collection are a hand-picked selection that we feel best represents each particular theme, with themes chosen based on what we know our customers love; for example our black and white art collection or our curator’s collection of affordable art under €500.

Further inspiration can be found in our bestsellers range, where you can find our tried and tested customer favourites. Please remember though that our artworks are limited-edition, so you might want to buy them quickly before they sell out!

Our top tip for narrowing your choice down is to have a first pass of selecting 20 or so artworks you want to buy, add them to your wishlist by clicking on the heart icon on any artwork, and then review them all in one window in your Wishlist. This will help you see the overall colour, style and feel of the artwork you are naturally choosing, which may help you further refine your choice.

It may sound obvious, and whilst we are absolutely fans of buying art online that you love ‘just because’, thinking hard about which room your art will be housed in and which wall in that room is best suited to that artwork is a great place to start!

If you’re purchasing a large piece of art for a large wall, for example above a sofa or sideboard, you need to visually ‘anchor’ it to that piece of furniture. This means the width should complement but not exceed the width of the furniture below it in order to avoid a ‘top-heavy’ feeling. If you do fall in love with a piece of art that’s bigger than the furniture you intend to hang it above, all is not lost - consider how you can visually extend the floor space; for example with plants in plant pots or small side tables.

Next, carefully consider the wall size and shape - this is where things get interesting! If you have a wider wall with a low ceiling, it might feel logical to fill the width with a wide, landscape piece of art, whereas in fact the opposite is true! Portrait (vertical) orientation artworks on a wide wall draw your eye upwards, creating the illusion of length. The inverse is true for narrower walls with higher ceilings - balance the space better with a landscape oriented artwork to draw the eye horizontally, creating the illusion of width!

The number one question people ask about hanging art is how high to hang it! In our galleries, we hang art at 1.65m, which is at eye-level for most people. The space that’s left above the piece of art doesn’t matter, the main priority should be that the artwork is comfortable to view. Don’t be tempted to hang art higher in a room with lower ceilings, as this does not create an illusion of height and can make the whole room seem unbalanced. If you do want to hang wall art higher, anchor it to some other architectural feature in the room.

Conversely, you can consider hanging your art intentionally low, and anchoring it to a lowboard for an unusual vignette effect - anchoring artworks to furniture like this visually extends the space of the furniture and can bring space to smaller rooms.
