Introduction

One of the greatest compliments Patrick Demarchelier ever received came from the legendary Vogue editor-in-chief Anna Wintour: “Every woman looks more beautiful, and more like herself, through Demarchelier's lens.” The most important moment during a shoot, explains Demarchelier, is between relaxation and concentration, when the models often feel they are not being watched. This is when his favourite images appear, celebrations of a unique style that has made him one of the most sought after fashion photographers in the world.

Before moving from Paris to New York in 1975, Demarchelier had worked as an assistant to Henri Cartier-Bresson and had begun to shape his own style of modest elegance in magazines such as ELLE and Marie Claire. Through masterful lighting and perspective he is able to create a perfect composition between proportion and subject. To him, the view through the camera is a magical moment and photography itself a particularly physical process. Demarchelier therefore prefers to take photos by hand rather than from a tripod, and this allows him to react spontaneously to the models.

The most spectacular photos from the last forty years of his career, which include countless covers from Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar, are probably his portraits of Princess Diana in 1989. It was the very first time a French photographer was commissioned by the British royal family. Though a natural, radiant icon, Diana does not appear untouchable in the images, but displays instead a stunning charm.
