Abstract art at LUMAS: photography, painting and digital works

At LUMAS, you can discover abstract art by established artists and new voices: abstract photography, painting, graphic art and digital art. Our curatorial team travels throughout the year – to art fairs, exhibitions, galleries and studios – to select the works in our portfolio.

Whether photography that dissolves form or painting driven by gesture, every abstract piece is produced in gallery-grade quality. You can buy abstract art online or at one of our 19 LUMAS galleries, including Berlin, Paris, London and New York – where you can see the works in person. The latest editions are waiting for you under New Releases.

Abstract art in limited editions

Between the unique piece and the mass-produced print lies the edition: a work in a small, fixed run that allows more people to collect art without compromising on quality. Every work in a limited edition is hand-signed and numbered by the artist.

A certificate of authenticity states the number of the piece, the total edition size, the printing technique, the format and the year of creation. Alongside limited editions, there are open editions with no fixed run.

What is abstract art? Form, colour and a reality of its own

Abstract art emerged in Europe around 1910. Rather than depicting visible reality, it creates a pictorial reality of its own from form, colour, line and composition. Strictly speaking, an image is only fully abstract once every object has disappeared – yet many works still carry traces of nature, architecture or everyday life. Colour and form are the true protagonists.

Among the best-known abstract painters are Wassily Kandinsky, Joan Miró and Jackson Pollock, and many of Pablo Picasso’s Cubist works are abstract as well. Closely related movements include Expressionism, Fauvism and Suprematism. In the 20th century, abstraction also reached sculpture, and movements such as Minimalism took shape.

Find abstract art for your home

In our abstract art selection, you can filter by technique – such as painting & illustration or objects –, by format such as square, panoramic or round, and by colour such as black and white. That way, you will find the work that suits you and your home.

A large landscape format creates a calm focal point above the sofa, while small formats can be combined into a gallery wall.
