A VISIT TO THE STUDIO:
DOROTHEE LIEBSCHER

Dorothee Liebscher

Upon entering Dorothee Liebscher’s studio, it quickly becomes clear that she sees it as a kind of laboratory: a very private space where she experiments behind closed curtains, shielded from outside view. Her works emerge through a layered process between intuition and craftsmanship, for which she has created the necessary environment in her studio.

As she flips through sketches and visual ideas, she explains where she finds her inspiration: in her own archive of photographs of plants, landscapes, and spaces. She reorganizes and fragments this material – giving rise to pictorial spaces that feel both familiar and distant. Parallel worlds in which something new, a third entity, emerges from the fusion of architecture and nature.

People do not appear in her compositions – instead, the viewer becomes part of the image. “The human being enters this world through their gaze,” she says.

What emerges is more than a constructed space: she creates a space for meaning.

Liebscher works deliberately slowly and exploratively – a multi-layered process driven by curiosity that remains intentionally visible in the final work.

STAGE 01

It begins with a feeling.

Liebscher follows it through sketches – initially “very delicate and playful,” as she explains. Intuition and a spirit of experimentation later blend with artistic clarity and technical precision:

STAGE 02

Applied in layers.

After building and priming her own canvas, she begins realizing her vision: initial, watery layers of acrylic paint are applied.

STAGE 03

A depth that unfolds.

While oil paint adds depth and intensity, traces of the first layers remain consciously visible. They create the characteristic luminosity that seems to radiate from within the painting.
