Margarete Schrüfer's Vision

The principle of folding

Margarete Schrüfer studied sculpture in Nuremberg; a formative period in Tokyo profoundly shaped her artistic language.

Japanese aesthetics, the tradition of origami, and the concept of mono no aware – the awareness of beauty within transience – form the foundation of her practice. For Schrüfer, origami is not a technique but a principle. All living forms are shaped by folds – from blossoms to butterfly wings to the DNA helix. Her series Simulacrum does not reproduce nature. It distills it.

The process

Each blossom is folded by hand. Each stage of the fold is photographed and digitally layered, step by step. Multiple moments of unfolding become visible at once – a composition shaped by time. What we see is not a fleeting bloom, but its underlying structure.

The Tondo

For the first time, LUMAS presents a circular Art Drop. The Tondo is among the most demanding formats in art history – and a rarity in contemporary photography. In Schrüfer’s work, form follows concept: the circle mirrors the logic of the motif – the natural cycle as a symbol of flourishing and transformation.
