Background Information about Corinne Wasmuht

Introduction

The more fast-paced and interconnected our world becomes, the more prescient Corinne Wasmuht’s large-scale paintings seem. Born in Dortmund, Germany in 1964, the 2011 Biennale participant began collecting material for her collages during her studies at the Düsseldorf Academy of Arts. The vibrant energy that permeates her works is the result of a painstaking creative process. She builds her works layer by layer on a wooden base, slowly assembling the finished image from countless overlapping elements.

The widely acclaimed artist can perhaps most accurately be described as an astute chronicler of modern life. Whether depicting architecture, street scenes or the digital world, her meticulously-assembled oil paintings serve as both an antidote to, and reflection of, the chaotic entropy of our world. In her Berlin studio, the artist digitally compiles and collates the thousands of individual photographs and images that will be used in each work. She then begins the lengthy, meditative painting process to bring her vision to life.

The resulting works overflow with color, detail and visual information, creating a hyperstimulating first impression. Surfaces and forms overlap and merge, challenging our concept of space and depth. Underpinned by an expert eye for composition, Wasmuht strikes a delicate balance between the deliberate precision of her application and her turbulent, rapidly-changing subject matter.
