Katz` Porträt von Laura Halzack, der Primaballerina der Paul Taylor Dance Company in New York City, besticht durch seine spannungsreiche Eleganz im Zusammenspiel von Farbe, Fläche und Form. Ungewöhnlich für Katz ist die bewusste Reduktion auf Schwarzweißfarbtöne wie in der Fotografie. Dieses Ausdrucksmittel zusammen mit dem im Zentrum stehenden intensiven Blick der Tänzerin, seitlich aus dem Bild heraus, verleiht dem Werk eine außerordentliche Aura und sehr lebendige Präsenz. Das Werk inszeniert einen Moment der Schwebe, einen losgelösten Augenblick im Fluss der Bewegung, der zugleich von großer Introspektion erfüllt ist. Die Tänzerin hebt sich sinnlich von der Umgebung ab, zieht die Blicke auf sich, während der dunkle Hintergrund des Bildes zum abstrakten Resonanzboden des Porträts avanciert. Die feinen Gesichtszüge, die stolze Haltung, der in die Ferne gerichtete Blick der Tänzerin wirken ikonenhaft und menschlich zugleich und erinnern an eine klassisch-filmische Großaufnahme.

Über den Künstler

Der Amerikaner Alex Katz (geb. 1927) ist bekannt für seine figurative Malerei. Seine Werke repräsentieren die dreidimensionale Welt in flächenhaften, vereinfachten Portraits und Landschaften. Katz wurde in Brooklyn geboren, besuchte die Cooper Union School of Art in New York und studierte dann Kunst an der Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture of Art in Skowhegan, Maine. Inmitten der Blüte des abstrakten Expressionismus in den Vereinigten Staaten malte Katz in den 50er Jahren repräsentative Werke, wobei seine schnellen, expressiven Pinselstriche jedoch den Einfluss von Künstlern wie Jackson Pollock und Willem de Kooning widerspiegeln. Für sein Œuvre der späten 50er und frühen 60er Jahren sind insbesondere sein Festhalten an vereinfachten Formen und genauen Lichtstudien, Farben und Flächen unverkennbar. Seine Treue zum Figurativen und seine Zuwendung zur zweidimensionalen Fläche nehmen die Charakteristika der Pop Art der 1960er Jahre voraus.
Katz schuf zudem Collagen, Druckgrafiken und Bühnenbilder. Zunehmend konzentrierte er sich auf diese Medien und entwickelte im Laufe der 1970er Jahre seine freistehenden Skulpturen. Später malte er großformatige Landschaften, entwickelte in seiner Arbeit „Environments“, die den Betrachter einbinden und ihn in das Kunstwerk eintauchen lassen, und arbeitet bis heute mit naturnahen Themen. Katz hatte unter anderem Einzelausstellungen im Irish Museum of Modern Art in Dublin, im Jüdischen Museum und Brooklyn Museum und dem Whitney Museum of American Art in New York sowie im Centro de Arte Contemporáneo im spanischen Málaga. Der Künstler erhielt zahlreiche Ehrungen für seine Arbeit, wie das Guggenheim-Stipendium und eine Mitgliedschaft in der American Academy of Arts and Letters. Er lebt und arbeitet in New York und Maine.

Alex Katz wurde 1927 in Brooklyn, New York, geboren.
