Der 1951 in Miami Beach geborene, heute in Malibu, Kalifornien, lebende Douglas Busch nennt seine Serie von Meeresbildern „Silent Waves“. Stille Wellen – stille Wogen: Seit 2003 fängt Busch mit digitaler Fotografie in ungewöhnlicher Perfektion ruhige, erhabene und dramatische Momente der ewigen Begegnung von Licht und Wasser ein. Seine Bilder scheinen wie selbstverständlich, als hätten sie sich samt ihrer meditativen Stimmung von selbst erschaffen. Selten treffen wir auf solche Bilder nach der Natur, den, obgleich mit modernsten technischen Mitteln kreiert, eine stark malerische, gefühlvolle Qualität innewohnt. Buschs Bilder erinnern an abstrakte Malerei, sind deshalb so anmutend, weil sie „Wasser“ und „Licht“ in fragil-sinnliche Farbkompositionen übersetzen.
„Im späten Frühjahr 2003 bezieht Douglas Busch vorübergehend einen Strandbungalow in Malibu, dessen Sonnendeck sich über das Meer schiebt. Seine Meeres-Bilder beginnen nun den Bereich der wiedererkennbaren Fotografie zu verlassen, werden zunehmend ungegenständlich und geraten zu Meditationen über Licht und Farbe. Buchstäblich Tag und Nacht fotografiert er das Meer von der Morgendämmerung bis zu den letzten Resten des natürlichen Lichts am Abend und in der Nacht schließlich mit Hilfe von Scheinwerfern, die das nächtliche Meer illuminieren. (…) Es entstehen farbreduzierte Bilder, die nur noch wenig mit Fotografie, wie sie herkömmlich verstanden wird, zu tun haben. Beinahe monochrome Studien in Blau, Grau, Orange oder Gelb tragen keinen erkennbaren Inhalt mehr. Es geht nunmehr um das Licht und die Farbe im Bildraum. Gelegentlich sind in diesen Strukturen noch einzelne Wellen oder Wolken zu erkennen. Diese verstärken die Bildwirkung beinahe noch, da sie einziges Referenzobjekt sind. Dies ist nicht Buschs Inkonsequenz geschuldet, vielmehr ist die Wirklichkeitsnähe Beleg für die Freiheit, die sich der Künstler in der Ausarbeitung dieses Werkes nimmt. “ Thomas Schirmböck
